Sheila graduates!
Sheila Nesbit, chairperson of Gateshead People Self Advocacy Group graduated from Inclusion North's Tomorrow's Leaders course on Friday 28th April.
In her speech at the Graduation Ceremony held at the Newcastle Assembly Rooms Sheila said she had learnt a lot from the other learners, presenters and tutors about being a leader. She described how she is now better organized in her role as chairperson with setting the meeting agendas and making sure everyone has a chance to speak.
Sheila is also a member of the Involvement Now Team, the Peer Education Group, Community Links Gateshead Learning Disability Partnership Board where she is well known for speaking up on behalf of people with learning disabilities in Gateshead.
Sheila's project for Tomorrow’s Leaders was on the Safe Places Scheme in Gateshead. She carried out some secret shopping in three Safe Places in central Gateshead to find out if their staff follow the Safe Places guidelines and how effective they are at supporting people. She also used a questionnaire to find out what people with learning disabilities from Gateshead knew about Safe Places and what their experiences were if they had used them.
Well done Shelia!
