Emma has been working with us as an Advocacy Support Volunteer for the past six months, supporting people living with dementia to have their voices heard and ensuring they are listened to with dignity and respect.

Emma has recently completed a degree in psychology and can use her volunteering experience to help her plan her future career path. Reflecting on her experience, Emma said:

"I enjoyed engaging with the clients and checking on their wellbeing since the last visit. Through advocacy volunteering, I have helped people with dementia feel listened to and respected. Making sure their voice is heard can make a real difference to their confidence and wellbeing."

While Emma's volunteering has had a positive impact on the people she supports, she says it has also made a huge difference to her own life.

"Advocacy volunteering has made a significant difference to me both personally and professionally.  One of the biggest changes has been the increase in my confidence. Through supporting and speaking up for others, I have become more comfortable communicating with a wide range of people, including individuals who may be vulnerable, professionals and service providers."

Emma has developed valuable skills in communication, problem-solving, organisation and time management, while also learning to remain calm in challenging situations. She says the role has given her a greater understanding of the barriers some people face in accessing support and the importance of ensuring everyone's views are heard and respected.

The experience has also had a lasting personal impact.

"Listening to people's experiences has broadened my understanding of the issues that can affect individuals and communities. It has encouraged me to approach situations with empathy and an open mind. It has strengthened my confidence, improved my communication skills, and given me a greater appreciation of the value of supporting others. I am grateful for the opportunity to have made a positive contribution while continuing to learn and grow myself."

We're incredibly grateful to Emma for her commitment and the compassion she brings to her role. Volunteers like Emma make a real difference every day, helping to ensure people have a voice and are listened to.

If you've ever thought about volunteering, Emma's story shows just how rewarding it can be - for the people you support and for yourself.  Visit www.yvc.org.uk/volunteers for more information.
